Benjamin has an idea
The Royal Australian Navy’s recent rollout of the ‘Personal Wi-Fi Access’ (PWA) system on several Australian warships is accompanied by the security vulnerabilities inherent in any system connected to the internet. Such vulnerabilities, including the danger of adversaries gaining access to the ship’s live positioning data or monitoring the crew’s online activity and personal information, threaten the RAN’s capacity to achieve its primary mission: to ‘fight and win at sea’.
The ‘Onboard Personnel Multimedia Device’ (OMPD) is a concept proposal which aims to address these security concerns with a hybrid network structure while retaining the entertainment benefits that the existing system provides.
